CCBL Game Rules

CCBL Rules: all age groups

NOTE: CCBL is following the Cal Ripken ruling allowing composite bats.

  • No big barrel bats allowed
  • Free substitution of players in and out of the game
  • Continuous batting order – all players are in the batting order
  • No head first slides, except back to the base the player occupies
  • Base runner must avoid contact
  • No 10 batter rule – the defense must get 3 outs
  • There is a 10 run slaughter rule after 4 innings
  • Minimum of 8 players required to start a game
  • Time limit: do not start another inning after 1 hour 45 minutes, no ties
  • If a player must leave the game early (for reason other than ejection), spot in batting order is skipped with no out assessed
  • If a player arrives after the game has started, the player can be added to the bottom of the batting order.
  • Coaches must be in dugout or directly in front of dugout; no buckets or equipment outside of dugout

Pitching Rules:

7U & 8U:

  • Machine Pitch will use spring loaded machine set on #8 setting for 7U, #9 setting for 8U; 46’ distance; host will provide machine.
  • Batter gets 5 hittable pitches or 3 strikes; umpire calls “no pitch” for unhittable pitch; maximum 2 unhittable pitches per batter; player at pitcher position must have one foot outside of circle and be even with or behind machine
  • If batted ball hits machine, dead ball; batter and any base runners get one base
  • Coach Pitch: coach must pitch from directly in front of the pitcher’s rubber and throw a “flat” pitch – no lobs to the player’s bat; player at pitcher position must have one foot outside of circle and be even with or behind coach.
  • Batter gets 5 hittable pitches or 3 strikes; umpire calls “no pitch” for unhittable pitch; maximum 2 unhittable pitches per batter.
  • If batted ball hits Coach, dead ball; batter and any base runners get one base

NOTE: when MP and CP teams play each other, the machine is to be set up at 46’ and left on the field; CP pitcher should pitch from in front of the machine. This is so that time is not wasted resetting the machine between every inning.

9U & 10U:

  • pitching distance is 46'
  • pitchers may not pitch more than 2 innings per game; 1 pitch thrown in an inning counts as an inning pitched
  • Balks are not called at this age
  • base runner may not take a lead, and cannot run until the ball crosses the plate

11U & 12U:

  • pitching distance is 50'
  • pitchers may not pitch more than 2 innings per game; 1 pitch thrown in an inning counts as an inning pitched
  • Balks are called at this age; umpires will give one warning to pitcher
  • base runners may take a lead and run whenever they want

Other Rules:

Infield Fly Rule in effect for ages 9U, 10U, 11U and 12U (not in effect for 7U and 8U).

No Slashing (square to bunt, then pull back and swing away) at any age group.

Ages 7U and 8U can play a fourth outfielder; all outfielders must play at least 12' behind the base paths.

Ages 7U and 8U: no bunting, no stealing or advancing on past ball.

Any rules not covered above revert to the Cal Ripken Tournament rules for each age group. The CCBL Protest Committee will rule on any issues, protests, etc., and the decision of this committee will be final. The committee is comprised of the local Tournament Director, and the CCBL official, Al Dahlgren. Umpires judgement calls may not be protested.
